 THE FACILITY

Selkirk Cogen, located on the grounds of the General Electric Company’s plastic manufacturing plant in Selkirk, New York, is a 345 megawatt (MW) natural gas-fueled, combined-cycle cogeneration facility. It provides up to 80 MW of electricity to Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation and 265 MW of electricity to Consolidated Edison Company of New York. This is enough electricity to meet the needs of about 345,000 homes. Selkirk also meets all of the process steam needs (up to 400,000 pounds per hour) of the adjacent GE Plastics facility. As a result of savings realized from this steam supply, GE Plastics early on was able to double its production while holding its energy costs stable.

 TECHNOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE

Selkirk was originally constructed as a stand alone, 80 megawatt facility, consisting of a single, natural gas-fueled combustion turbine generator set, a heat recovery steam generator, and a noncondensing steam turbine generator set. The plant's Phase I began commercial service in April 1992. In Phase II, two gas turbines, two waste-heat recovery boilers and one steam turbine generator were added, bringing the plant's generating capability to 345 megawatts. Phase II went into commercial service in September 1994.

 STEWARDSHIP

Since its construction leading to commercial operations in 1994, Selkirk Cogen has set the standard for what it means to be a good neighbor. The plant and its employees are proud participants and supporters of a host of community organizations and activities including safety awareness events, environmental stewardship, educational programs including academic scholarships and the introduction of innovative courses, as well as other community projects to augment the vitality of the area.

 OWNERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT

The plant is owned by Selkirk Cogen Partners, L.P., with National Energy Gas & Transmission, Inc. providing partial ownership and complete management interest since 1994. Day to day operations and maintenance are performed by a GE Plastics labor force managed by GE Contractual Services.
